Is a DNA Test Worth It? A Perth Pharmacist’s Own Result
Our pharmacist Sim did his own DNA test. Here’s what he found, and how a DNA test can help fine-tune which supplements suit you.
Your DNA doesn’t change
Your DNA stays the same throughout your life, so a DNA test is generally something you only need to do once. You can come back to your report as your health goals change.
But your DNA is not your destiny
Genes are only part of the picture. Your diet, lifestyle and environment all influence how your genes are expressed. This is called epigenetics. A DNA test shows your tendencies, not a fixed future.
What Sim’s DNA test showed
Our pharmacist Sim did his own DNA test and found he has a “slow” COMT gene.
COMT is an enzyme that helps break down dopamine and stress hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenaline. When COMT works a bit slower, these can hang around a little longer.
Magnesium is an essential mineral for COMT to work. That’s why magnesium became one of the essential minerals Sim pays attention to.
How a DNA test can help
- Supplements: understand which supplements may suit you, rather than guessing.
- Medicines: see how you may respond to some medicines, something you can discuss with your GP.
- Lifestyle: know your tendencies, so your diet and lifestyle choices are better informed.
